What is an All-on-Four Denture?
An All-on-Four Denture, also known as a Fixed denture or implant retained/supported denture, is a Fixed denture held in place by 4 or more dental implants. Though 4 implants is the minimum for a fixed denture, the upper arch or in softer bone more implants may be required.
These dentures are implant retained, by attaching to the implants, and implant supported taking on the entire weight of the denture load. This makes them very stable without any movement or need to remove them. However, annual maintenance visits to the dentist are needed to clean, evaluate and possibly replace the housings to ensure the maximum life of the All-on-Four Denture.
All-on- Four Dentures can be made of several materials, including acrylic with reinforced metal mesh or a metal frame or zirconia. The type of material used is decided on a case-by-case basis depending on the patient’s dental history and needs.
As mentioned previously, All-on-Four Dentures are fixed, which means that only the dentist can remove them. This requires the patient to meticulously clean the dentures and the tissue around the implants with water flossers and special floss to ensure the maximum life of the denture and implants.
There are several advantages of Fixed dentures over Snap-In dentures. The most desired advantage is that All-on-Four dentures do not need to be removed.
All-on-Four Dentures offer a great option to patients that desire a fixed denture option if they can consistently maintain and clean them.
